I am the policy chair for the Mike Menear Campaign. Thank you for your
enquiry.
As someone with a daughter who suffers from Fibromyalgia, I was delighted to
receive your e-mail. Please consider this brief reply an indication of
moral support, on my behalf and on Michael Menear's behalf, to your
commendable efforts to find the cause, better treatments, and a cure for
Fibromyalgia.
Best Wishes,

Thank you for your letter. I suspect that we all know a number of people afflicted with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I think that
it is important to continue research to find the cause, better treatments, and a cure for this disabilitating condition.

I would be happy to lend my voice of support to your cause. We have a family

been for her.
Good luck in your efforts.

Thanks for your email. Over the past few weeks, I have met several people
at the front door who have told me about their concerns about the healthcare
system. As you know from our platform, we consider healthcare to be a
pivotal issue in this campaign, and we are committed to restoring healthcare
transfer payments so that the provinces can focus on meeting our needs over
the coming five years. I personally know someone who has suffered from CFS
for years, and I know some of the heartache and depression that can come as
a result of CFS.
Thanks for your commitment to this cause.

I am very pleased to add my moral support to the cause of bringing relief to to those who suffer from a chronic condition. Like most of us, I have friends in that situation and it is heartbreaking to watch them doing their best to cope despite their pain. Many of these conditions are not well understood and it behooves all of us to get behind efforts at discovering causes and developing cures. That would unleash a great amount of human energy which can only be good for everyone and the country.

I do know that Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue are becoming more and more common. I know there is great debate within the medical community as to its causes.

I wish you and your association well.

Thank you for your letter of solicitation for a statement of moral support for families affected by fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
In Canada, many families are affected by fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. These conditions cause more than just physical pain to those who suffer from them; additionally, they can cause hardships for families who must watch their loved ones suffer from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. I offer my strongest moral support to all families affected by these illnesses.
When it comes to health care, Canadians deserve better. The Conservative Party of Canada has straightforward guiding principles when it comes to Health Care. The first is that all Canadians should have reasonable access to timely, quality health care services regardless of ability to pay. The second is that health care is a provincial jurisdiction, and that means the federal government has to work with, not dictate to, the provinces when it comes to health care. We also support the 2003 First Ministers' Health Accord as we feel that it would increase the level of quality and timely care for all Canadians.
The Conservative Party recognizes the importance of health sciences research in enhancing the health of Canadians and as a dynamic economic sector in its own right. A Conservative government will foster an environment that encourages health sciences research and development of new health care technologies in part through the provision of an adequate level of federal funding.
Again, I pledge my moral support for the families affected by fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Thank you again for taking the time to write.

Thanks so much for your note.
I am aware of this condition and have been for some time. I have worked
in civil litigation and have worked on cases for people who have developed
this condition. I am aware of how debilitating it can be.
I hope that our researchers will develop many-pronged approaches to
treatment and eventually prevention. I am very encouraged by, not only
new drug research, but all of the help that can be provided by
professionals such as naturopaths and other alternative routes.
I also wonder how much it will help once we clean up our environment, a
little more.
This is a very mysterious illness, but I believe that we will get to the
bottom of this!
Let's all just keep on it, try our best, and see how far we can get!
Keep up the great work!

Having worked on many campaigns in the past I know that issues such as
dealing with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, are the ones that
matter most to people. They are not grand abstracts, but are actual

is anything I can do in the future to be of assistance feel free to contact me.

You must know that I support your worthy cause. But more than that, I want to make a difference with regard to the state of our health care. While my party has promised to cover the Liberals' unfulfilled obligations to the 2003 health accord with the provinces, I want to go further and encourage Canadians to question the effectiveness of a system which drives 80,000 patients across the border for immediate care. Surely this underlines the dysfunction in our system.
I believe that if we are all willing to discuss useful change, instead of cowering in fear whenever someone raises the spectre of "American style health care", we can eventually bring it into the modern world. We have much to lern from all over the world, and yet we are falling behind because of fear-mongering.

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are very deadly illnesses and I
agree that everything should be done to find better treatment and a cure as
soon as possible.
These illnesses are not fully understood by the working force and also
members of society.
Education and awarenes are two important factors to get people to understand
how these illnesses affect the body's ability to perform normally.
There is a lot of stress involved effecting families and friends.
We have to try to give people their dignity back and have them live normal

There has been a continuing depletion of "covered medical services" over
the last ten years. This erosion, coupled with waiting lists that are
getting longer by the day, are very indicative of a health care system
that has been neglected and passed over. The current Liberal regime has
had ten years to address health care and have done a poor job of it.
They now want an endorsement from "Canadians" for re-election so that
they can now implement a new "ten year plan" to fix it.
A Conservative government led by Stephen Harper is committed to
implementing the $36.8 billion in new funding committed under the 2003
First Ministers' Accord on Health Care Renewal. This funding is over
five years, most of it in transfers to the provinces for core health
services, medical equipment purchases and to support provincial efforts
in three primary areas: acute home care services, primary care renewal
and catastrophic drug coverage.

I am pleased to respond to your e-mail concerning important issues of FM-CFS Canada. I recognize the seriousness and widespread nature of FM-CFS and would be supportive of any initiatives to find a breakthrough in this area.
A Conservative government led by Stephen Harper will work with provinces to build on the 2003 Health Accord on Health Renewal, provide stable long-term funding for health care, hold the federal and provincial governments accountable for Health Accord promises, respond more effectively to public health emergencies, improve access to new drugs and natural health products, and promote amateur sport and physical fitness.
We will also ensure that new drugs and treatments for all illnesses, including Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, receive faster approval times. Longer review times mean that Canadians wait longer for the benefits of new and improved drugs. A Conservative government will clear the drug approval backlog and bring drug approval waiting times in line with acceptable standards.
I am looking forward to working with all Canadians, and my future constituents in Huron-Bruce, to ensure that changes being demanded by Canadians are made.
Respectfully,

Thank you for your inquiry.
I'm very interested in learning more about fibromyalgia. Our platform
recognizes the importance of health sciences research to the health of Canadians and our party is firmly committed to improving our capacity to perform research. We plan to uphold funding of innovation through partnerships with universities and the private sector. We also plan to support technology and research through the granting councils, with a competitive peer review process and enhanced transparency and accountability.
Should I get elected, I urge you to contact me on this issue. I believe that your representatives in the House of Commons should be fully briefed on the concerns of the community they represent.
Thank you for your interest.

Thank you for your message.
The state of our universal health care system is of great concern to Tom
Jackson and the Conservative Party. The needs of those suffering from
chronic illnesses are like many users of the system, not being sufficiently
met.
A Conservative government will work with the provinces to restore our health
care system. We will fully implement the 2003 National Health Accord worth
$37 billion. Further, we plan to invest $13 billion over the next 5 years,
including the creation of a National Catastrophic Drug program.
Encouraging and funding research is an important role of the Federal
government. A Conservative government will encourage investment in research
through tax incentives and a competitive intellectual property regime. We
will work in partnerships with universities and uphold independent granting
councils.
Yours truly,
Myles Wilson for the
Tom Jackson Campaign
Too often, our governments equate health care with pharmaceuticals and
hospitals with treatment. As a society, we are finally beginning to
appreciate the value of non-hospital medical services like chiropracty
and physiotherapy. These services go beyond the lifesaving capacities
of our hospitals and provide a service whose contributions to Canadians
cannot be measured. These services improve quality of life, a value
every bit as important as improving health itself. The need to live and
the need to live free of pain are inseparable, and a governmental system
that cannot provide relief to the sick has no right to call itself
'health care' at all.
We pledge our support to the causes of fighting crippling immune
diseases like Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and encourage
you to do all you can to maintain public funding for the treatment of
these conditions as we do all we can to distribute the funds to fight
them all.
All the best,
Rod Bruinooge

Congratulations in your work for such an important cause. I have met many people suffering from Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and I appreciate the efforts they must make to deal with life under those circumstances. If elected, I would be very supportive of the research and efforts to find the cause, support the treatments, and eventually find a cure. A Conservative government would immediately take action on implementing the Health Accord of 2003 and this would go a long way to relieve the financial stress of provincial governments in financing the growing costs of our health care system. Hopefully, working in partnership, our both levels of government can resolve some of the challenges facing our health system.

Thank you for your email on the issue of the one million Canadians, mainly
women, who suffer from Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
One of the reasons many medical services have been curtailed or cut out is
that there has been a severe funding crunch brought on by $25 billion in
cuts to federal transfers for health care over the past decade. The
Conservative Party is comitted to restoring the funding under the Canada
Health Accord, and is further committed to restoring accountability to our
health care system. Money is needed, but so is widespread reform. Our aim
is to make the sytem responsive and compassionate towards Canadians and
their health care needs.
If re-elected, I will continue to advance the healthcare needs and
aspirations of my constituents in Parliament.

Colleen Beaumier has been a vocal advocate, locally and in Ottawa, on behalf of those living with the challenges of FM-CFS. I’ve attached an article and photograph that will appear in our next piece of campaign literature to be distributed next week to 35,000 homes in Brampton West.
Colleen is committed to continue her efforts in support of those who live with this illness and those who work on their behalf. Colleen and her many supporters are in the midst of a close election contest with former Ontario Minister of Health Tony Clement. possible.
We certainly hope that you and others can effectively help these poor
sufferers.
While much of health care and delivery is under provincial jurisdiction,
if there is any assistance possible from the federal government, I am sure
that you would have the ear not just of Joe Fontana, but of most if not
all other parliamentarians.
Yours truly,
Ken Vigeant

This once again reinforces the reason Prime Minister Martin has made Health Care the number one issue of his Government.
I believe that the issue of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is not as well known as it should. This is something we need to change. Any time there is an emerging sickness or disease; there must be a corresponding awareness strategy.
There is always hope for a cure. I encourage you to continue your writing campaign and raising the awareness of this affliction.
I wish all those who live with the disease my most sincere support in combating this. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to meet me.
Sincerely,
Bill Cunningham

Of course I would like to send my best wishes and hopes for those afflicted
by these conditions. I am suprised to realize that so many are affected and
I would also extend whatever support I may offer to the family members that
are also effected in dealing with these issues.

I thank your organization for contacting my campaign. Indeed, I am eager to
give moral support in the hope of finding a cure for Fibromyalgia and Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome. Both conditions undoubtedly cause an emotional toil for
those afflicted and their families. Has there been any calculation of the
economic loss created by the two conditions in Canada? I would be very
interested if such a study existed.
I want to wish your organization well in its endeavours to develop new
treatments and an eventual cure.
Sincerely,

Thank you for your e-mail. I have noted your views. The delisting of services by Ontario is certainly an issue that will receive attention in the days to come following the federal election.

Thank you for you for your letter. Yasmin asked me to respond on her behalf. She is familiar with
Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and assures you that if elected
she will work to encourage more research into the root causes, better
treatment methods and hopefully one day a cure.
She believes in positive energy and sends her good wishes, moral support
and encouragement to all those who are suffering the effects of prolonged
debilitating pain, poor sleep and fatigue.

Made the following statement to Parliament in 1999
"Chronic Immunological and Neurological Diseases
Mr. Speaker, May 12th is International Awareness Day
for Chronic Immunological and Neurological Diseases such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia,
gulf war and multiple chemical sensitivity syndromes.
These devastating illnesses are striking a growing number of Canadians who suffer from cognitive problems,
chronic muscle and joint pain, extremely reduced stamina and numerous other symptoms which leave sufferers
ill and bed-ridden for years at a time. Most sufferers are unable to work because of their pain.
However, their suffering is not only physical. A lack of public knowledge about these disorders often causes sufferers their jobs and their disability benefits.
A constituent, mother and close friend of mine, Leni Spooner, suffers from fibromyalgia syndrome.
She will live with this condition for the rest of her life. Her 16 year old daughter was
also recently diagnosed with the same disorder.
I urge all members of Parliament to spread the word about these devastating conditions so that people
like Leni and her daughter may suffer a little less."
Thank you for your message on behalf of those who are suffering from
Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatique Syndrome. No matter what the causes of
these diseases may turn out to be, rest assured that I know the suffering
that people endure is real.
You have my support in your organization's quest for answers to the causes of
these disease, for improved treatment regimes and ultimately, a cure. It
would indeed be wonderful if we could avoid the occurrence of these chronic
illnesses.
Please feel free to keep me informed of future initiatives by your
organization.

Thank you for your email of June 11th, 2004 regarding the serious issue of Canadians suffering from Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. As a Member of Parliament and a Physician I have a unique point of view when it comes to healthcare issues. Due to my knowledge in the medical field, I know that prevention of chronic illnesses is not only better for the patient but better for the country as well, as it costs less to prevent an illness than to treat it.
I would certainly advocate that more medical research is necessary to find cures for many illnesses including Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I believe that is something that would benefit all Canadians.
Sincerely,
Dr. Keith Martin, M.P.

Thank-you for bringing to my attention the concerns of the FM-CFS Canada, I
always appreciate hearing the issues that are important to my constituents
and all Canadians.
I recognize that Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are serious
health concerns. It is important to make efforts to find the cause, better
treatments, and to find a cure. I believe it is important to do all we can
to prevent more people from getting this illness.
I look forward to your support and to representing the people of Portage

Thank you for your email on behalf of FM-CFS Canada. Fibromyalgia and
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are certainly illnesses that are under recognized,
as well as illnesses that the general public have a relatively small
awareness of.
Mr. Bonwick's office has been able to help a handful of constituents apply
for and receive Canada Pension Plan Disability, which was a tremendous
breakthrough.
In addition, medical professionals are making a great contribution in the
fight against Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Paul Martin and
the Liberal Government have made a sustained commitment and have outlined
predictable funding to the healthcare system.
Paul Martin and Paul Bonwick recognizes that healthcare is the top priority
of Canadians and he will work with medical professionals to improve the
system to the level that Canadians expect and deserve.
Kind Regards,

Thank you for your letter.
I know several people personally who have been living with fibromyalgia.
From experience with it and other illnesses among my own friends and family, I have a positive opinion about the efficacy of alternative therapies as enhancement to conventional medical courses of treatment.
Certainly positive developments in the "cause/ treatment/cure" search for this uniquely frustrating condition, as well as many others, is a goal very worthy of pursuing.
Sincerely,

On behalf of Liberal candidate for St. John's North, Walter Noel, this
will acknowledge receipt of your recent email requesting our candidate's
support for your efforts on behalf of those inflicted with Fibromyalgia
and Chronic Fatigue Snydrome.
A chronic illness such as fibromyaligia and chronic fatigue can be a
debalitating and despairing disease that impairs the quality of life of
those unfortunate enough to be afflicted. Emotionally and physically the
costs are many - and then there is the added factor that it is often
misdiagonised and not yet broadly recognized by the medical community.
These factors only compound the misery it often brings to the lives of
those who are disabled by such an illness. Furthermore, it is a disease
that is difficult to comprehend given the complexity and the diversity of
the symptoms.
As a person who has has experienced a post-viral syndrome - and have
endured many months of fatigue and fibromylia, I enourage all efforts to
make this disease a priotity in terms of identifying a cause and focusing
on better treatments and even illiciting recognition and respect by
medical personnell and the community. I am one of the fortunate ones who
have emerged from this illness, but more importantly I have been left
with a better understanding and compassion for those whose lives are
still affected by this disease.
Our candidate has been briefed on this issue and fully appreciate the
challenges that are faced by those - particularly women - who are
experiencing this difficult health issue.
We offer our complete moral support for the one million Canadians lives
who are limited by such a chronic illness. Furthermore, our candidate
endorses a review and reversal of those policies which would compromise
equality to public health care by provincial government's delisting
policies.
All the best as you seek to promote awareness and reform those policies
which erode equality of health care access with respect to this very
vital issue.
Sincerely;

Many thanks for your message, and your appeal for support in the battle
against Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which afflict mainly
women.
Jack Layton and Canada's NDP want to strengthen the Canada Health Act,
not weaken it by removing areas of coverage. The following is a quote
from the Healthcare chapter on the NDP website - www.ndp.ca
"Strengthening the Canada Health Act to prohibit public money going to
private, for-profit hospitals and responding to technological change by
deeming diagnostics such as MRIs as medically necessary services, thus
protecting them from privatization.
We must also vigorously increase enforcement of the Canada Health Act,
which will be much more feasible once federal funding is restored to 25
per cent."
Therefore, Jack Layton is proud to give you his moral support, and to
encourage efforts to find the cause, better treatments and a cure to
these illnesses.

Thank you for your email. I understand the impact of a lack of full coverage for alternative medicine
under provincial health plans. I personally have had to use physio and
chiropractic services many time to relieve pain, and it is a bad thing
indeed when these services are delisted by a provincial government. Most
cannot afford to pay for these services out of pocket.
Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are terrible maladies, and I would
like to send my support to those suffering from them. We need to find a
cure, and we need to find better treatments.
Thank you for drawing attention to this important issue.

Any potential erosion of the Canada Health Act is of the utmost concern to me. Thank you for the
information, and I wish you much success with your endeavor.
Sincerely,
Jeff Sloychuk,
NDP Candidate, Red Deer.
There is no question that you have my full support in this matter. I'm a
person living with a disability myself and I know full well what the
withdrawal of services means to the disabled community. Inequalities in
our health care system including discrimination issues with the private
insurance companies are a hot item with me. As a recent amputee, I'm
active on the federal NDP Disability Rights Committee and am a volunteer
peer counsellor for new amputees at the GF Strong rehabilitation facility.
One of our committee members suffers from Fibromyalgia so I've been
reasonably well educated on the matter.
Thank you for your interest and good luck with your program.

Thank you for taking the time to write to our campaign. At this time I
would like to assure you and your members that you have my support in
this issue Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome along with a host
of other health care problems are been overlooked all over our great
nation. Here in Alberta as in the rest of the country we have seen
attempts by provincial governments to undermine our health care system
and move us towards a two tier system, which I will not allow to happen.
Once elected here in Calgary North East I will make sure this issue gets
the attention it deserves in the Parliament and I can assure you once
again that with the NDP plans to implement the Romanow report and reform
health care so as to make it fully accessible we will be able to shed
light on your cause.
Thank You

Thank you very much for your note concerning fibromyalgia and C.F.S. You are
probably not aware but I am a primary health care worker and have been for
over 20 years so I am well aware of the two illnesses you mentioned and have
seen the damage they do to individuals and families. Cuts to medical care are
constantly being made with the result that those affected are being denied
access. I agree with you that chiropractic and physiotherapy are essential
elements of care for chronic and painful illnesses. Press on with your public
education work and advocacy.

I fully support anything that I
may be able to do to forward the plight for FM. I personally know someone

these issues. Whatever I can do please get in touch.

Thank you for your note. And for implying that I'm a respected member of the community. I hope my constituents agree...I'm running against Mr. Reynolds in West Vancouver - Sunshine Coast so I have an uphill battle. Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are terrible illnesses. I have
watched as friends with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome suffer and know

I extend my encouragement and support to all who suffer with these

Thank you for the opportunity to state my position on this important matter.
I have a member of my immediate family who suffers from this debilitating
illness and understand full well the devastation and pain it can impose on
those afflicted by it. Through this family member I have had contact with
others who suffer from Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
While I have listened from time to time to the information provided to the
public locally through persons such as Judy Day I must admit to not being
fully aware of all the issues surrounding this illness.
I am aware enough however to offer full personal support to FM-CFS Canada in
any initiative it undertakes which will result in the easing of the
difficulties imposed on those who suffer from the condition and am totally
supportive in finding the cause, better treatments and a cure for the
illness. I am glad to do so.
Thanks again for contacting me Mr. Ernst and offering me the opportunity to
participate in achieving the goals of FM-CFS Canada.
Every best wish,
Michael Kehoe

I offer my strong support to the more than one million Canadians afflicted with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. These are debilitating illnesses that affect many families across the country.
The NDP upholds the principles of the Canada Health Act and we strongly support Roy Romanow's proposals described in the recent Royal Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada. We believe in a fully-funded public health care system, including pharmacare to assist Canadians with prescription drugs. Many illnesses are treated through drugs, and a publicly-funded pharmacare program is essential for Canadians facing massive drug costs because of illnesses like Fibromyalgia.
I hope that we will soon find the cause and a cure for these illnesses, and I encourage your work at FM-CFS Canada.
Yours truly,
Ed Broadbent
NDP, Ottawa Centre
Thanks for your note and for your work to draw more attention to this issue.
Considering the proven value of Physio and Chiropractic services, delisting
is a real step back. I think it is a symptom of the larger problem of the
Liberals abandoning our health care system. Reducing core funding from 50%
to 16% has had real life costs. The NDP has pledged to restore funding to
25% as per the Romanow Commission and keep health care delivery public!
Please make lots more noise on this issue.
Best wishes
Kennedy Stewart
NDP candidate, Vancouver Centre
One of my dear friends from school suffers from Fibromyalgia, and I have watched for two years as she has had to work extra hard, through chronic pain, to complete her degree.
As a mother and a student, she had to work so much harder to compensate for Firomyalgia, I couldn't imagine her doing it if she had to pay extra money for her pain relief.
The NDP supports upholding the Canada Health Act, unlike the Liberals who have let it slide again and again. We also support increased funding towards our Health Care, keeping Health Care public, including maintaining public delivery, and a national plan for buying pharmacuetical drugs in bulk to save money.
We support your efforts to find the cause, treatment, and cure of Fibromylagia.
Thank You,
